Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested two suspected arms suppliers during an intelligence-led operation in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects, identified as Udeme Udo, 52, and Nkereuwem Udo, 40, are both natives of Ikot Abia Idem Village in Ikot Ekpene, according to the police.

The Command said the suspects were apprehended in the early hours of May 8 following intelligence reports linking them to a network allegedly involved in supplying arms and ammunition to criminal elements operating within Ikot Ekpene and neighbouring communities.

Police said a locally made revolver pistol was recovered during a search conducted on the suspects after their arrest.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Baba Mohammed Azare, said the operation was part of ongoing efforts by the Command to dismantle illegal arms networks and tackle violent crime across Akwa Ibom.

He added that investigations were ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged syndicate.

The police assured residents of the Command’s commitment to improving security and urged members of the public to continue providing useful information to aid crime-fighting efforts.
