The Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially zoned its presidential ticket for the 2027 general election to Southern Nigeria, a decision widely viewed as strengthening the position of former Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi within the party.

The announcement was made on Saturday 9th May, 2026 during the party’s national convention in Abuja, where delegates and senior party figures gathered to deliberate on key organisational and electoral matters ahead of the next election cycle.

The party also confirmed the zoning arrangement in a post on its official X account, declaring that the NDC presidential ticket had been reserved for candidates from the South.

Among prominent figures present at the convention were Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, both of whom recently joined the party amid ongoing political realignments across the opposition landscape.

Convention discussions reportedly covered issues including zoning arrangements, ratification of amendments to the party constitution, and the election of new national executives.

The NDC has in recent weeks experienced a wave of defections from rival political parties, particularly the African Democratic Congress and the People’s Democratic Party.

Earlier in the week, 17 members of the House of Representatives formally defected from the ADC to the NDC during plenary proceedings at the National Assembly. The lawmakers include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Thaddeus Attah, Lilian Orogbu, Peter Aniekwe, Afam Ogene, and several others.

The defections followed the formal admission of Obi and Kwankwaso into the NDC two days earlier. Both politicians received their membership cards after a closed-door meeting with party leaders and were welcomed into the party by former Bayelsa State Governor and NDC national leader, Seriake Dickson.

Obi, who was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, had previously attributed his departure from the ADC to persistent internal disputes, external interference, and growing tensions within party structures.
