The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a formal notice to broadcast stations across Nigeria, raising concern over a sustained increase in violations of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, particularly in news, current affairs, and political programming.
In a press release signed by its Public Affairs Department, the Commission said recent monitoring has revealed that several broadcast platforms are deviating from their core responsibility to inform the public with “accuracy, balance, and professionalism.”
The regulator warned that, as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, it will enforce strict compliance with all provisions of the broadcasting code. It emphasized that particular attention would be paid to issues of fairness, objectivity, and the avoidance of hate speech and incitement, as well as respect for constitutional institutions.
“The Commission hereby notifies all broadcasters and stakeholders that it will enforce strict, uncompromising compliance,” the statement read.
A major concern highlighted by the NBC is what it described as a growing “crisis of anchor and presenter professionalism.” According to the Commission, there has been a noticeable departure from established ethical standards guiding broadcast journalism.
Citing Section 1.10.3 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, the NBC reiterated that presenters are prohibited from expressing personal opinions during programmes, noting that such conduct undermines professional standards and compromises audience trust.
The Commission called on media organizations to reinforce internal editorial controls and ensure that their staff adhere strictly to the code, warning that sanctions may be applied to defaulters.
The directive signals a tightening regulatory environment for Nigerian broadcasters as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the next general elections.
