The widow and children of late Nollywood comic actor John Okafor, widely known as Mr Ibu, have called on Nigerians to come to their aid, describing a difficult financial situation that has left them unable to cover rent, school fees and other essential needs.

The family shared their story during a video interview with content creator King Mitchy, detailing the hardship they have faced since the actor’s passing.

According to his widow, the household has gone without electricity for close to two months after the power supply was cut off due to outstanding bills. She added that the family now depends on well water, as they can no longer afford basic utilities.

“We fetch water from the well because I haven’t been able to pay the house rent. They’ve disconnected my electricity for two months now no light at all. Every night, we have to find somewhere to charge our phones. It hasn’t been easy,” she said.

One of the late actor’s daughters commended her mother’s resilience in holding the family together through the tough times.

“I’m grateful to God for my mum. She does everything she can to feed us, pay our school fees, and keep us happy,” she said.

The widow also disclosed that her children’s education was now at risk, as unpaid fees threaten to keep them out of school.

“They can’t go to school right now. I can even show you the message the school sent me today,” she said.

King Mitchy, who conducted the interview, said efforts were underway to rally support for the family particularly to help settle school fees, clear rent arrears and restore power to their home.

Mr Ibu, celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most beloved comedians, died on March 2, 2024, at age 62.
