Manchester United have reportedly opened discussions over a possible move for Aston Villa defender Ian Maatsen as the club continues its search for defensive reinforcements before the summer transfer window closes.

According to reports from the Manchester Evening News on Saturday, August 29, 2026, United have identified the left-back position as one of the areas they want to strengthen, alongside their search for a new striker.

The Premier League side are believed to have enquired about the 24-year-old Dutch defender after facing challenges in their pursuit of Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall, who remains their preferred target for the position.

Newcastle have reportedly been reluctant to sell Hall after losing several key players during the current transfer window, making a deal difficult to complete before the deadline.

Manchester United’s interest in another left-back has been influenced by concerns over Luke Shaw’s ability to maintain consistent fitness and handle a demanding schedule, particularly with the club returning to European competition.

Maatsen has started both of Aston Villa’s matches this season following Lucas Digne’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain. However, Villa have strengthened their defensive options with the signing of Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid.

It remains unclear whether Manchester United are considering a permanent transfer or a loan deal for Maatsen. Aston Villa’s stance on allowing the defender to leave has also not been confirmed.

Further developments are expected as United continue efforts to strengthen their squad before the transfer window deadline.
