Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) for the 2027 general election.

Makinde clinched the party’s ticket at its presidential primary election held on Saturday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, paving the way for his participation in the next presidential contest.

Accepting the nomination, the governor said his aspiration was driven by a desire to restore hope, strengthen public confidence in governance, and provide practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.

“I stand before you today with deep humility and a profound sense of responsibility as I accept the nomination to serve as the Presidential Candidate of the Allied People’s Movement for the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Makinde told party delegates.

He expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to overcome its economic difficulties through disciplined leadership, transparency and reforms that directly impact citizens.

“I believe that we possess the capacity to rebuild our economy through honesty, discipline and practical reforms. When I speak of practical reforms, I mean reforms that directly improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians,” he said.

Makinde outlined key areas of focus for his proposed administration, including reforms in the oil and gas sector, arguing that Nigerians should benefit more from the nation’s natural resources.

“Nigerians must benefit from the fact that we are an oil-producing nation, just as citizens of other resource-producing countries benefit from their natural wealth,” he stated.

The governor also called for a comprehensive restructuring of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), saying the company should operate more efficiently and competitively.

“The NNPC must be reformed into a lean, efficient and commercially driven institution through proper corporate restructuring, stronger partnerships and institutional reforms,” he added.

Makinde further identified agriculture as a major pillar of economic growth, stressing the need to improve agricultural production, processing, storage and distribution systems to boost food security and create jobs.

According to him, his campaign would be anchored on competence, accountability and tangible solutions rather than political rhetoric.

The primary election drew support from party stakeholders and political allies. Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by his deputy, Mohammed Jatau, endorsed Makinde’s candidacy and described him as a leader with the capacity to move Nigeria forward.

“We are here on behalf of the government and people of Bauchi State to support, endorse and celebrate the emergence of our dear distinguished brother, Oluwaseyi Makinde, as the Presidential Candidate of the Allied People’s Movement,” Jatau said.

Also speaking, APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, commended party members for conducting what he described as a peaceful and transparent primary election.

He expressed optimism that the party would present a strong challenge in the 2027 general election with Makinde as its standard-bearer.
