Manchester United bounced back from their opening-day Premier League defeat with an emphatic 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday, as captain Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick to inspire the comeback win.
Ipswich, who had defeated Sunderland in their league return the previous weekend, shocked the home crowd by taking the lead in the 29th minute through Leif Davis. The defender produced a powerful half-volley after a strong attacking move involving Abdul Fatawu.
United responded before half-time when Matheus Cunha set up Fernandes, who levelled the score in the 40th minute after the hosts capitalised on a mistake from Marcelino Núñez.
The momentum shifted further in the second half when Harry Maguire’s effort was deflected into his own net by Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves in the 56th minute, giving Manchester United the lead.
Five minutes later, Greaves conceded a penalty after bringing down Cunha inside the box. Fernandes stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to extend United’s advantage.
The Portuguese midfielder completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute, reacting quickest after attempts from Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo were blocked inside the Ipswich penalty area.
United continued their attacking pressure and added a fifth goal in the 82nd minute when Fernandes sent Mbeumo through on goal. The forward’s effort struck the crossbar before crossing the line to make it 5-1.
Ipswich scored a late consolation goal in stoppage time when Julio Enciso provided the assist for substitute Chuba Akpom to reduce the deficit.
The result marked a strong response from Michael Carrick’s side after their surprise defeat to Hull City in the opening fixture. Fernandes’ three goals also came shortly after he was named PFA Men’s Player of the Year.
Manchester United’s victory moved them back on track ahead of a demanding run of fixtures involving Premier League, Champions League and Carabao Cup commitments.
