Liverpool have received a boost in their efforts to address defensive concerns after manager Andoni Iraola confirmed that experienced defender Joe Gomez is expected to return to team training soon.

The development comes after Liverpool ended the summer transfer window without strengthening their right-back position, an area that had raised concerns among supporters following injuries and inconsistent performances.

Gomez, who has spent most of his Liverpool career as a central defender, has also played at right-back on several occasions and could provide additional options for Iraola’s squad upon his return.

Speaking during a press conference on Thursday, Iraola said Gomez was the closest injured player to making a comeback and could resume training with the team in the following week.

“The closest one is Joe. He will probably start training with us next week. I hope we can have him before the international break,” Iraola said.

Liverpool’s right-back options have been limited, with first-choice defender Conor Bradley currently sidelined with a long-term injury, while Jeremie Frimpong has struggled to consistently impress since joining the club.

Gomez’s return could allow Iraola greater flexibility, including the possibility of keeping midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai in his preferred midfield role after the Hungary international was used as a right-back during Liverpool’s recent 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest.

Iraola praised the versatility of his players, saying the squad remained willing to adapt to different positions when required.

“I haven’t found any situation where a player has said he doesn’t want to play in a position. We have discussions, but everyone wants to help,” the Liverpool manager said.

However, the club is still waiting longer for the return of some injured players. Iraola confirmed that Conor Bradley and forward Hugo Ekitike will need more time before they are available.

Bradley has been recovering from a serious knee injury suffered against Arsenal in January, while Ekitike has been sidelined since April after suffering an Achilles tendon injury.

Liverpool are also expecting defender Giovanni Leoni and winger Federico Chiesa to return to training soon. Iraola said Leoni is expected to begin group training during the international break, with Chiesa also nearing a comeback.

Liverpool are scheduled to face Ipswich Town, Atletico Madrid, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and Bournemouth before the end of the month’s international break.
