A landslide at a major landfill in Conakry, Guinea’s capital, has killed at least 30 people following heavy rainfall, government officials said.
The incident occurred early Sunday at the Dar Es Salam landfill, where a huge heap of refuse collapsed after heavy rains began around 2 a.m., burying nearby makeshift structures.
Six people were seriously injured, while several homes were destroyed. Rescue teams were deployed to search through the debris for possible survivors.
The landfill, the largest open-air waste dump in Conakry, had reportedly been scheduled for closure on the day of the disaster.
According to authorities, residents living around the site had previously received eviction notices, prompting some families to leave the area. However, many people were still present when the landslide occurred.
Guinea’s Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation, Dienabou Touré, said the government would relocate the remaining families living around the landfill to safer areas.
