Tensions in the Gulf have intensified sharply after Iranian missile and drone attacks struck Kuwait International Airport, killing one person and injuring dozens, while the United States carried out retaliatory strikes on Iranian territory, according to officials on Wednesday.

The latest exchanges mark a dangerous expansion of hostilities between Iran and the United States, with Kuwait and Bahrain also reporting incoming missile threats as regional tensions spill further across the Gulf.

Kuwaiti authorities confirmed that Iranian drone and missile strikes hit Terminal 1 of Kuwait International Airport, causing significant structural damage and forcing a temporary suspension of flights.

Officials said one person was killed and dozens more were injured in the attack. Emergency services were deployed as fires broke out and debris scattered across parts of the airport.

The Kuwaiti government condemned the strike as a violation of its sovereignty and ordered the expulsion of two Iranian embassy staff within 24 hours, signalling a sharp diplomatic escalation.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said the attacks were part of retaliatory operations targeting U.S. interests in the region, warning that the strikes “should serve as a lesson” for Washington.

Missile and drone activity was also reported near Bahrain, with regional air defence systems intercepting several incoming projectiles, according to military statements.

Tehran has framed the operations as a response to ongoing U.S. military pressure and strikes on Iranian assets.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that it conducted “self-defence” strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island, targeting what it described as a military control facility.

U.S. officials also said American and allied forces intercepted multiple Iranian missiles and drones launched toward Gulf states, including Kuwait and Bahrain.

CENTCOM said its forces had successfully “defeated multiple” aerial threats and took additional action to neutralise Iranian military infrastructure in response to the attacks.

Despite the escalating violence, U.S. President Donald Trump insisted that diplomatic channels with Tehran remain open.

Trump dismissed suggestions that negotiations had broken down, saying that “conversations between us have been going on continuously,” even as military exchanges intensify.

However, uncertainty remains over whether ceasefire discussions can hold as both sides continue to trade strikes across the region.

The widening conflict has raised alarm across the Middle East, with Gulf states increasingly exposed to cross-border attacks and airspace violations.

Energy markets have also reacted, with concerns over the Strait of Hormuz a critical global oil route adding pressure to already volatile global supply chains.

As missile strikes, drone attacks, and retaliatory operations continue, fears are growing that the confrontation between Iran and the United States could evolve into a broader regional war involving multiple states.
