The United States has launched new air strikes against Iranian targets, ending hopes that a recent exchange of attacks between both sides would not escalate into a wider resumption of hostilities.
The strikes, announced by the United States Central Command, targeted positions linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Washington said the operation was carried out in response to what it described as Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and American military personnel stationed in the region.
The latest military action follows a weekend confrontation in which U.S. forces carried out strikes against Iranian positions, after which Iran launched attacks targeting U.S. bases in Jordan. The renewed exchanges have raised concerns that the conflict could move beyond limited retaliatory operations.
Iranian state-linked media reported explosions in several locations, including areas around Bandar Abbas, Chabahar, Jask, and Sirik. Iranian officials condemned the strikes and warned that Tehran would respond.
U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Iran would face further action if it retaliated against the latest strikes, while Iranian officials said the United States would face consequences for continuing military operations.
The renewed hostilities have also increased concerns over global energy supplies, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining a major focus of tensions due to its importance as a route for international oil shipments. Oil prices rose following reports of the latest attacks and fears of possible disruptions to crude exports.
Diplomatic efforts to maintain a pause in fighting have faced renewed challenges, with both Washington and Tehran accusing each other of violating previous understandings aimed at reducing tensions.
The United States has also indicated that additional economic sanctions targeting Iranian entities could be introduced, while Iran has maintained that it will resist external pressure through both diplomatic and military means.
The latest strikes mark a significant escalation in the confrontation between the two countries and have renewed fears of a broader regional conflict.
