Iran says it has strengthened its air defences around the Strait of Hormuz as heightened United States military activity and renewed warnings from Tehran deepen tensions in the strategic waterway.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has recently claimed that a new advanced air-defence system operating within the country’s integrated defence network intercepted unmanned aircraft over the Strait of Hormuz. The United States has not independently confirmed several of Iran’s interception claims.
The developments come amid reports of increased US reconnaissance and fighter aircraft activity around the region.
US F-16 aircraft based at Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany have previously been deployed to the Middle East during the conflict with Iran. The 52nd Fighter Wing operates a squadron of the aircraft at the German base.
However, reports that 12 F-16 fighter jets are currently being transferred from Germany towards the region have not been officially confirmed by the United States.
Meanwhile, commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has faced significant disruption as the conflict continues to affect one of the world’s most important energy corridors. Iran has indicated that it could reopen the waterway if Washington reduces military pressure and lifts its blockade of Iranian ports.
Iranian officials have also warned against further US or Israeli attacks, saying renewed strikes could widen the conflict beyond its current geographical boundaries.
Tehran has maintained that it is closely monitoring US military movements while strengthening its defensive capabilities amid continuing diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.
The latest military developments come alongside negotiations aimed at reducing tensions and restoring navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, which remains critical to international energy supplies and global shipping.
