The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the deployment of Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) to Nigeria’s geopolitical zones as part of renewed efforts to strengthen operational efficiency and improve national security coordination.

The deployment, which takes effect from Monday, June 15, 2026, was announced during the monthly strategic conference of senior officers held at Force Headquarters, Abuja.

According to the IGP, the initiative is designed to bring senior leadership closer to operational theatres, enhance supervision, improve accountability, and ensure quicker response to emerging security threats across the country.

He directed the deployed DIGs to work closely with Assistant Inspectors-General and Commissioners of Police to ensure effective implementation of policing strategies and strengthen command oversight within their respective zones.

In a related directive, the IGP ordered all Commissioners of Police nationwide to immediately commence coordinated inter-state security operations tagged “Handshake Patrols.”

The initiative is aimed at improving intelligence sharing, strengthening communication between commands, and enabling joint responses to crimes that cut across state boundaries.

The Police Chief noted that criminal elements often exploit jurisdictional gaps to evade arrest by moving across state lines, stressing the need for a unified and regional policing approach.

He further instructed Commissioners to intensify collaboration with neighbouring commands, conduct joint patrols along major entry and exit routes, and ensure seamless operational coordination.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to intelligence-led policing, inter-agency collaboration, and proactive security strategies aimed at safeguarding lives and property nationwide.
