The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has confirmed the killing of one of its officers and the injury of another following an attack by unidentified gunmen during a routine patrol in Niger State.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, along the Tunga Taya-Woro axis, where two officers attached to the Wawa Control Post were conducting surveillance operations.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 8, the NIS Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, identified the deceased as Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I.U. Babangida and the injured officer as Inspector A.K. Musa.

According to the service, the officers came under attack while carrying out their official responsibilities.

Musa sustained serious injuries but managed to escape. He was subsequently taken for medical treatment.

The NIS confirmed that Babangida had been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, describing his death as a painful loss to the service.

It commended the deceased officer’s dedication and commitment to national service, extending condolences to his family, colleagues and loved ones.

The service also expressed concern over Musa’s condition and wished him a speedy recovery.

It assured the families of both officers of continued institutional support and assistance.

The NIS disclosed that it was collaborating with the Niger State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the attack, identify those responsible and ensure their prosecution.

The service maintained that the incident would not weaken its commitment to border security, surveillance operations and the protection of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

It reaffirmed its determination to continue discharging its statutory responsibilities despite the security challenges confronting personnel in the field.

The identities of the attackers and their motive had not been established in the statement, while investigations into the incident remained ongoing.
