Several European and Asian governments have issued security advisories to their citizens travelling to or residing in France following violent protests that resulted in widespread arrests, looting and clashes with security forces.

The warnings were issued on Monday, October 19, as French authorities continued efforts to restore order after demonstrations over rising living costs and declining public services escalated into violence over the weekend.

Protests held across France on Saturday, October 17, were followed by incidents of arson, property destruction and confrontations between protesters and police.

Among the affected locations was Limoges, where a historic town hall building was set ablaze during the disturbances.

Italy advised its nationals in France to avoid large gatherings, exercise heightened caution and register their presence through designated government platforms to facilitate contact during emergencies.

Germany warned that further disturbances could occur and urged its citizens to comply with instructions issued by French security authorities.

The German government also cautioned that individuals who failed to leave unauthorised demonstrations when instructed could face legal or financial consequences.

The Czech Republic similarly advised its citizens to avoid demonstrations, marches and other large public gatherings, citing deteriorating security conditions.

Poland recommended avoiding protest locations but did not change its overall assessment of whether France was safe to visit.

Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway also urged their nationals to stay away from demonstrations and follow guidance from local authorities.

Outside Europe, China called on its citizens planning to visit France to remain vigilant, assess potential security risks and avoid areas experiencing unrest.

Malaysia said it was monitoring developments and advised citizens to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improved.

However, Malaysian authorities clarified that travel to France remained unrestricted.

The advisories come as French authorities introduce additional security measures to prevent further violence and protect residents, businesses and visitors.

Despite the warnings, the countries involved have generally advised increased caution rather than announced blanket prohibitions on travel to France.

Travellers have been encouraged to monitor official updates, avoid protest hotspots and comply with local security instructions.
