The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has commenced an investigation into allegations of criminal defamation, cyberstalking and related offences following a petition filed on behalf of Senator Effiong Bob.
Police say the petition alleges that Mr Ewa Okpo published and circulated false and defamatory materials on social media.
The Command confirmed that the suspect has been arrested and is assisting with ongoing investigations.
The Police warned that while freedom of expression is guaranteed by the Constitution, it does not permit the spread of falsehood, cyberbullying, blackmail or other unlawful online activities.
The Command also cautioned that individuals who knowingly share or amplify malicious content may be held liable if found complicit.
The Police assured the public that the investigation is being conducted professionally and in accordance with the law, adding that anyone found culpable will be prosecuted before a court of competent jurisdiction.
