Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 by the Portuguese Football Federation following a disciplinary dispute with national team head coach Jorge Jesus.
The federation announced the decision on Monday, October 19, after investigating the 41-year-old forward’s decision to leave Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen, Denmark, on September 30.
According to the federation’s Disciplinary Council, Ronaldo was found to have intentionally violated Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations by leaving the national team camp without authorisation.
The disciplinary action followed disagreements between Ronaldo and Jesus over the player’s involvement in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League fixtures.
Tensions reportedly escalated after Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on September 27, during which Ronaldo remained an unused substitute despite warming up.
Ronaldo subsequently accused Jesus of failing to honour assurances concerning his playing time.
The Portuguese coach denied making the alleged agreement but indicated that the experienced forward could return to the national team once their differences were resolved.

Following the disagreement, Ronaldo departed Portugal’s camp before the team’s subsequent Nations League encounter against Denmark.
The incident prompted the federation to open disciplinary proceedings against its captain on October 9, with a provisional suspension imposed while investigations continued.
Ronaldo later apologised to supporters and teammates for his conduct, acknowledging that his decision to leave the squad warranted disciplinary consequences.
He also expressed his willingness to return to international duty after serving any punishment imposed by the federation.
Although the final disciplinary ruling was announced on October 19, Portuguese reports indicate that the 30-day suspension took effect on October 1 and is scheduled to expire on October 30.
This means Ronaldo could become eligible for Portugal’s November international fixtures, subject to his fitness and selection by the coaching staff.
Portuguese Football Federation President Pedro Proença has publicly expressed support for the captain’s eventual return, emphasising his importance to the national team.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s most-capped international player and leading goalscorer, having represented the country for more than two decades.
The disciplinary decision adds another chapter to the forward’s international career as Portugal prepares for its remaining Nations League commitments.
