France delivered a commanding performance on Monday night, defeating Iraq 3-0 in their Group I fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup held at Lincoln Financial Field.
The European side dominated proceedings from start to finish, with Kylian Mbappé scoring twice and Ousmane Dembélé adding a third goal to seal a comfortable victory.
France asserted early control of the match and took the lead in the 14th minute when Michael Olise set up Mbappé on the edge of the penalty area. The French captain responded with a powerful left-footed strike that beat the Iraqi goalkeeper and gave his side an early advantage.

Iraq struggled to cope with France’s pace and attacking movement, frequently retreating under pressure as the French forwards continued to create chances. Their difficulties were reflected in an early yellow card for Amir Al Ammari in the sixth minute after a foul on Mbappé during a threatening run.
The match was later disrupted by severe weather conditions, causing a lengthy delay before the second half resumed. However, France maintained their rhythm after the restart and doubled their lead in the 54th minute.
A defensive error from Iraq allowed Dembélé to capitalise before laying the ball off to Mbappé, who calmly converted for his second goal of the night.
France extended their advantage in the 66th minute when Olise once again played a decisive role. He drove forward from midfield before delivering a well-timed pass to Dembélé, who controlled the ball expertly and fired a precise finish into the far corner.
Despite falling behind, Iraq attempted to respond on the counterattack but were repeatedly denied by an organised French defence that maintained control until the final whistle.

The result strengthens France’s position in the group and underlines the depth and quality of their attacking options. Mbappé’s brace reinforced his status as one of the tournament’s most dangerous forwards, while Olise and Dembélé both contributed significantly with goals and assists.
France’s victory keeps them firmly on course for progression as the group stage continues.
