A shooting at a public library in northern California has left two adults dead and a child injured, according to local police, in what authorities described as a traumatic incident for the community.
The attack occurred on Monday afternoon at the Butte County Library branch in Chico, where police responded to emergency calls reporting gunfire and panic inside the facility at approximately 5:12 p.m. local time.
Authorities said two adults were fatally shot inside the library, while a juvenile victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge described the scene as deeply distressing, noting that the library was open to the public at the time of the shooting. He confirmed that the suspect used a single firearm during the attack.
According to police, the suspect fled the building through the rear exit as officers arrived at the scene but was later apprehended without incident and taken into custody. No exchange of gunfire occurred during the arrest.
Investigators said the suspect is believed to have acted alone, and no motive has yet been established. Law enforcement agencies are continuing to gather evidence and appeal to members of the public for additional information.
Authorities also announced that all Butte County library branches would remain closed on Tuesday following the incident.

California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed condolences to the victims and their families, praising the swift response of law enforcement in securing the area and apprehending the suspect.
Officials say investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are ongoing as the community grapples with the aftermath of the attack.
