A tragic head-on collision has claimed the lives of four women on the R23 road between Volksrust and Perdekop in Mpumalanga, raising fresh concerns about road safety in South Africa.

The fatal crash occurred on Friday night, 23 April 2026, when a sedan and a truck collided, leaving the female passengers in the sedan dead at the scene.

Emergency responders rushed to the site, where several others were found injured. Authorities confirmed that four additional victims including the sedan driver and three passengers sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious, while the truck driver escaped with slight injuries.

All injured victims were transported to a hospital in Standerton for urgent medical treatment.

Mpumalanga Community Safety spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said preliminary reports indicate that all four deceased were passengers in the sedan. Investigations into the exact cause of the crash are ongoing, although officials have not ruled out reckless or negligent driving as a contributing factor.

The province’s Community Safety MEC, Jackie Macie, has since urged motorists to exercise greater caution on the roads.

“We should all contribute towards making the road safer by always obeying the rules and driving with maximum concentration,” Macie said.

He further noted the broader impact of road accidents on the country, warning that billions of rands are spent annually through the Road Accident Fund to support victims placing a significant burden on the economy.

He has announced that the authorities have reinforced calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased driver responsibility, while appealing to the public to remain vigilant and prioritise safety at all times.
