Four adult men have been killed and several others injured following a violent communal unrest at Power Line Bus Stop, Ikola, in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, said the incident began with a disagreement that escalated into violence and was followed by a fire outbreak in the area.
The agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said emergency responders received a distress call at about 1:52 p.m. and arrived at the scene about 25 minutes later.
He said several makeshift structures were also destroyed by fire during the unrest, while injured victims received medical attention from emergency responders, including the Agbado Oke-Odo Ambulance Service and Nigerian Red Cross Society.
A resident, however, alleged that the crisis followed a confrontation between a northerner and a suspected cult leader, but the claim could not be independently verified.
Security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps were subsequently deployed to restore order and protect lives and property.
LASEMA said normalcy had been restored in Ikola and neighbouring communities, although security personnel remained on the ground to prevent further violence.
The agency urged residents to remain calm, avoid reprisals and refrain from spreading unverified information, as investigations continue to determine the immediate and remote causes of the incident.
It warned that anyone found culpable would face the law.
