Former Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing alleged lack of internal democracy in the party ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Nasarawa State.

Adamu formally submitted his resignation letter on Monday to executives of the APC in Makama Ward, Lafia, the state capital.

In the letter, the former police chief said recent developments surrounding the party’s governorship primary process in Nasarawa made it impossible for him to continue his political activities under the APC platform.

“This decision was not taken lightly. However, recent developments within the party, especially the conduct of the governorship primary election processes in Nasarawa State, have made it difficult for me to continue with my political activities under the platform of the party,” he stated.

Adamu said democratic principles such as fairness, transparency and equal opportunity for aspirants and members were no longer reflected in the party’s processes in the state.

“I strongly believe that internal democracy, fairness, transparency and equal opportunity for aspirants and members should guide the affairs of any democratic political party,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the events surrounding the primary election did not reflect these principles and have led to loss of confidence in the party’s leadership and processes in the state.”

The former IGP said he decided to withdraw his membership after consultations with supporters, political associates and family members, adding that he would pursue his political ambition on another platform.

Adamu, however, appreciated the opportunity given to him to contribute to the growth of the APC and thanked party members at the ward, local government and state levels for their support during his time in the party.

His resignation comes months after his political movement confirmed that he had obtained the APC governorship expression of interest and nomination forms for the 2027 election.

The Director-General of the Mohammed Abubakar Adamu 2027 Political Movement, Musa Hussein, had in April declared that the group was prepared to contest and win the APC governorship primary despite Governor Abdullahi Sule’s endorsement of Senator Ahmed Wadada.
