RIVERS POLICE CONFIRM OFFICER SHOT MOTORIST, PROMISE DISCIPLINARY ACTION

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed a shooting incident involving a police officer and a motorist in Port Harcourt, which resulted in the death of the vehicle’s occupant.

The Command said the incident occurred on August 27, 2026, following an altercation between the deceased, identified as Anthony Obodo, and a police officer.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agabe Kaborlo, the Command said preliminary findings indicated that a scuffle between Obodo and the officer escalated, resulting in gunfire that claimed the victim’s life.

The police also disclosed that two other passers-by sustained injuries during the incident.

Following the shooting, the alleged officer, identified as Corporal Alfred Louis, was reportedly attacked and assaulted by an angry mob, leaving him with multiple injuries.

The Command said the officer and members of his team had been taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for investigation.

According to the statement, the officers involved will face appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the law, subject to the outcome of the investigation.

The Police Command condemned the incident, describing the alleged conduct as unacceptable and inconsistent with the standards of professionalism expected of police officers.

It assured the public that it would take strict disciplinary action against any officer found culpable.

The statement added that the Rivers State Police Command would not shield any personnel whose actions amount to unethical conduct or bring the Nigeria Police Force into disrepute.
