Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to reject division and embrace tolerance, justice, mutual respect and dialogue as the country joins the rest of the world to mark the 2026 International Day of Peace.
In a message commemorating the occasion on Monday, the First Lady said lasting peace required the collective commitment and participation of individuals and communities.
She said efforts to build a peaceful society should begin within families and extend to schools, workplaces and communities.
“Peace begins in our homes and extends to our schools, workplaces, and communities,” she said.
According to the First Lady, peace is strengthened through tolerance, patience, justice, mutual respect and dialogue.
She called on Nigerians to place unity above differences and resist actions capable of creating divisions among citizens.
“I encourage all Nigerians to reject division and embrace the values that unite us as one people,” she said.
Oluremi Tinubu also urged citizens to recognise their individual roles in promoting peaceful coexistence through their daily conduct.
“Let us invest in peace through our words, choices, and actions every day,” she added.
The International Day of Peace is observed annually on September 21. The 2026 observance has the theme, “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.”
The observance was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981 to strengthen the ideals of peace, while in 2001 the General Assembly designated the day as a period of non-violence and ceasefire.
The First Lady said sustaining peace required collective responsibility and encouraged Nigerians to contribute to building peaceful homes, communities and a more united country.
