The Rivers State Government has commenced the distribution of food and non-food relief materials to residents affected by flooding in Khana and Gokana Local Government Areas.

The intervention is aimed at providing immediate assistance to households whose homes, property and livelihoods have been affected by flooding.

The distribution exercise is being coordinated in collaboration with local government chairmen, Community Development Committees (CDCs) and other community representatives to facilitate the delivery of relief materials to affected residents.

The Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Rivers State Flood Prevention and Management Committee, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu, disclosed this during the presentation of relief materials to the chairmen of Khana and Gokana at the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder operational base in Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr Honour Sirawoo, the deputy governor said the intervention formed part of the government’s emergency response to the flooding.

Odu explained that the materials were intended to reduce the immediate hardship experienced by affected families and provide temporary support while recovery efforts continued.

She emphasised that although the distribution would offer some relief, emergency assistance alone could not permanently resolve the recurring flooding challenges confronting communities across the state.

The deputy governor reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to pursuing sustainable flood prevention and management measures to protect lives, property and livelihoods.

She maintained that addressing the flooding problem required both immediate humanitarian intervention and longer-term measures aimed at reducing the vulnerability of affected communities.

The government said it would continue working with relevant stakeholders to strengthen flood management and support residents affected by the disaster.
