World football governing body FIFA has suspended the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) electoral process, putting on hold the federation’s planned September 27 elective congress.
The decision followed FIFA and the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) review of recent developments within the NFF, including leadership changes and concerns surrounding the federation’s governance, administrative structure and electoral process.
The suspended election was scheduled to be held in Lafia, Nasarawa State, as part of efforts to elect a new leadership team for Nigerian football. However, FIFA and CAF directed the federation to halt further electoral activities pending the completion of their assessment.
In a communication to the NFF, FIFA said the review would examine relevant facts, the federation’s regulatory framework and positions presented by various stakeholders before determining the next steps.
The move comes after recent developments within the NFF, including reported resignations involving the federation’s president, general secretary and members of the executive committee. FIFA and CAF are expected to engage stakeholders in Nigeria as part of the assessment process.
The football bodies are also expected to hold meetings in Abuja with representatives of the NFF, congress members, electoral bodies and other stakeholders to address the issues surrounding the federation.
The suspension affects only the ongoing electoral process, while FIFA and CAF continue their review of the situation before making further decisions.
