The Federal Government has inaugurated the Siemens Energy Education and Development (SEED) training facility in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with plans to train no fewer than 6,000 energy professionals over the next five years to strengthen Nigeria’s power sector.
The initiative, launched under the Presidential Power Initiative, is aimed at boosting technical capacity and developing skilled manpower for the country’s energy industry.
Speaking during the inauguration on Tuesday, the Director of Human Resources Management at the Federal Ministry of Power, Samaila Nasiru, described the project as a major investment in the future of Nigeria’s power sector.

According to him, while the government is making significant investments in transmission and distribution infrastructure, sustainable progress can only be achieved through deliberate human capital development.
“Although modernising the grid is essential, it is the empowerment of our people that makes such progress sustainable,” Nasiru said.
He explained that the SEED programme would equip participants with the technical skills needed to operate, maintain and optimise modern power systems across the country.
Nasiru added that the programme would be implemented in partnership with regulatory bodies such as the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), enabling trainees to obtain internationally recognised certifications.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FGN Power Company, Kenny Anuwe, said the initiative aligns with the objectives of the Presidential Power Initiative to modernise and expand Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure.
“Today’s event is not only about the launch of a training initiative. It is about investing in people and building the technical expertise required to sustain Nigeria’s energy transformation,” Anuwe stated.
He noted that the programme would support local content development and create employment opportunities by embedding technical knowledge within Nigeria’s workforce.
According to him, training centres would operate in multiple locations, including Abeokuta, Offa, Ibadan, Ayede, Birnin Kebbi and Sokoto.
Anuwe also commended development partners including Siemens Energy, the European Union, the German Government and GIZ for supporting Nigeria’s power sector reforms.

Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of Siemens Energy Nigeria, Sheu Suleman, said the programme would support the Federal Government’s efforts to reposition the power sector through technology transfer and workforce development.
The Country Director of GIZ Nigeria, Markus Wagner, also said the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader power sector reform agenda and would help improve technical standards and quality assurance in the industry.
