The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the development and deployment of four new satellites to strengthen Nigeria’s space technology and earth observation capabilities.
The initiative, being implemented through the National Space Research and Development Agency, is expected to expand the country’s ability to use satellite technology for national development and evidence-based decision-making.
The four satellites will comprise three optical satellites and one Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite.
According to the government, the new satellite systems will improve Nigeria’s capacity to monitor its territory and gather timely information on land and environmental conditions.
The SAR satellite will also provide an important advantage by enabling observation in cloudy conditions and at night, when conventional optical satellites may face limitations.
The technology is expected to support several critical sectors, including national security, agriculture, environmental monitoring, disaster management and urban planning.
The government said the initiative reflects its commitment to using science, technology and innovation to address national challenges and strengthen Nigeria’s technological capabilities.
