The Enugu State Police Command has condoled the family of Inspector Ikechukwu Obodo, who died in a hit-and-run accident in Enugu, assuring that efforts are ongoing to arrest and prosecute the fleeing driver responsible for the incident.
Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, conveyed the condolence during a visit to the deceased officer’s family through a delegation led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, ACP Oliver Odimega.
Describing the late inspector, a holder of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, as a dedicated officer whose death was a significant loss to the Nigeria Police Force, the Commissioner prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and comfort for his bereaved family.
According to the Police, preliminary investigations revealed that Inspector Obodo was on his way to his duty post at about 7:00 p.m. on July 5, 2026, when the commercial bus conveying him failed to stop at his designated bus stop along Bisala Road, Enugu, dropping him several metres away.
The Command said an argument reportedly ensued between the officer and the bus driver after they alighted, during which an unidentified speeding vehicle struck the inspector and fled the scene. The bus driver also reportedly drove away immediately after the incident.
Police operatives from the New Haven Division responded after receiving information from passers-by and rushed the victim to Parklane Hospital, where he was confirmed dead. His remains were later deposited in the hospital mortuary for preservation and post-mortem examination.
The Police also dismissed reports suggesting that the officer was hit by a government or security convoy, stating that investigations have not established such claims.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to identifying and apprehending the fleeing driver to ensure justice is served.
