A security guard identified simply as Godwin has been killed by suspected cultists in the Abule Ijesha area of Yaba, Lagos State.
RismadarVoice Reporters gathered that the attack occurred on Saturday evening, throwing the community into panic.
A police source, who spoken on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment on the incident, said the assailants arrived in a vehicle, accosted the victim near his duty post and shot him in the head before attacking him with an axe.

The source said, “We received a report that gunmen suspected to be cultists killed a security guard identified as Godwin in the area. The assailants came in a vehicle and shot him not far from his duty post. Eyewitnesses also reported that they attacked him with an axe.”
The gunmen were said to have fired sporadically into the air as they fled, causing panic among residents.
The police source added that security operatives had launched an investigation and were working to identify and apprehend those behind the attack.
Meanwhile, an anti-cultism platform, Naija Confra, claimed in a post seen by newsmen on Sunday that three other persons sustained gunshot injuries during the incident.
According to the platform, “Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers came in a white Mercedes-Benz, shot at Ibadan, and then attacked him with an axe on the head and hand. The attackers were also said to have fired randomly at other people in the area, leaving three innocent girls with bullet wounds. It is unclear whether their random shooting killed another person.”
The police have yet to confirm the reported injuries.

Efforts to contact the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, were unsuccessful, as calls to her telephone line went unanswered. A text message sent to her had also not been replied to as of the time of filing this report.
Cult-related violence has remained a recurring security concern in parts of Yaba despite police efforts to curb the menace across the state.
It will be recalled that in March, a student of Yaba College of Technology, Sultan Balogun Owolabi, was shot dead by suspected cultists near the institution’s premises. A source had said three young men approached the student and shot him at close range before fleeing the scene.
