The Chief Executive Officer of Enugu Air, Captain Tolu Ita, has clarified that the airline’s recent incident at Benin Airport was a runway excursion caused by hydroplaning and not a plane crash or emergency landing.
Speaking in a video shared on the airline’s official social media platforms, Ita said the aircraft, operating a scheduled flight from Lagos to Benin, veered off the runway during landing after hydroplaning on the wet runway.
She confirmed that all 63 passengers and five crew members on board were safely evacuated without injuries or fatalities.
Ita stressed that while the occurrence was a serious aviation incident, it should not be described as a crash. She added that Enugu Air is fully cooperating with the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and other aviation authorities as investigations continue.
Reaffirming the airline’s commitment to safety, the CEO thanked passengers, crew members, emergency responders, airport officials and the public for their support, assuring customers that safety remains the airline’s highest priority.
The NSIB has commenced an investigation into the incident and said a preliminary report will be released within 30 days.
