Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has said that an efficient payment system remains one of the fastest ways to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

Cardoso remarked on Monday in Abuja during the unveiling of the Nigeria Payments System Vision 2028, a strategic framework aimed at strengthening the country’s payment infrastructure and advancing financial inclusion.

According to the CBN governor, Nigeria’s payment ecosystem must evolve beyond facilitating transactions to become a driver of economic growth, job creation, financial inclusion and poverty reduction.

“One of the fastest ways to take a large number of people out of poverty is through an efficient payments system. It’s through an efficient payment system. So let us not look at it lightly,” Cardoso stated.

He stressed the importance of developing a modern, secure and inclusive payment system capable of supporting businesses, empowering individuals and expanding access to financial services across the country.

The launch event brought together regulators, commercial banks, fintech operators, development partners and other stakeholders in the financial services sector.

The Nigeria Payments System Vision 2028 is expected to provide a roadmap for enhancing digital payments, improving efficiency, strengthening security and promoting innovation within Nigeria’s financial ecosystem.

Cardoso noted that a robust payment infrastructure would play a critical role in supporting economic development by reducing transaction costs, improving access to financial services and creating opportunities for underserved populations.

He added that collaboration among regulators, financial institutions and technology providers would be essential to achieving the objectives outlined in the vision document.
