The Cross River State Government has introduced a new electric mobility programme with the distribution of 36 electric vehicles to Permanent Secretaries, marking a major highlight of the state’s Democracy Day celebrations.
Governor Monday Bassey Otu, who unveiled the initiative in Calabar, described the programme as a strategic step towards cleaner transportation, improved public service efficiency and enhanced welfare for senior government officials.
According to the governor, the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to strengthening the civil service by providing the tools and support needed for optimal performance. He noted that Permanent Secretaries play a critical role in policy implementation and governance, making their welfare a priority.

Otu said the adoption of electric vehicles followed a review of government expenditure, which revealed that transportation accounted for a significant portion of operational costs. While the administration initially considered compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative, it eventually opted for electric vehicles due to their long-term economic and environmental benefits.
He explained that beneficiaries would enjoy substantial savings on transportation expenses, as electric vehicles require less maintenance and eliminate many of the recurring costs associated with conventional fuel-powered automobiles.
The governor disclosed that the 36 vehicles represent the first phase of a broader programme involving the deployment of 100 electric vehicles and 100 electric tricycles across the state. He added that the long-term vision is to make electric mobility more accessible to residents while promoting sustainable transportation.
As part of the initiative, the state government also plans to establish charging infrastructure to support the growing use of electric vehicles. Otu revealed that relevant ministries have already commenced work on the development of charging stations across strategic locations in the state.
The governor further commended members of the Cross River State House of Assembly for their continued support of the administration’s developmental programmes through legislative cooperation and budgetary approvals.

Speaking at the event, Head of Service Orok Okon described the vehicle distribution programme as a landmark achievement for the state civil service. He said the initiative had boosted morale among senior public servants and demonstrated the administration’s commitment to improving working conditions within the bureaucracy.
Okon noted that previous generations of Permanent Secretaries had not enjoyed similar opportunities, describing the deployment of electric vehicles as a significant milestone that places Cross River at the forefront of innovation in public sector administration.
