The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intensified efforts to boost the capacity of its legal officers, with a focus on improving the prosecution of financial crimes across Nigeria.

Speaking at the opening of a three-day training programme in Lagos on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, urged the Commission’s lawyers to demonstrate greater diligence, precision, and professionalism in handling cases.

Olukoyede, who was represented by the Director of Legal and Prosecution, Sylvanus Tahir, SAN, said the training was aimed at enhancing the competence of legal officers in critical areas such as charge drafting, appeals management, evidence gathering, and trial preparation.

“This training is a strategic initiative designed to ensure our officers handle cases with the highest level of competence and professionalism,” he said, noting that continuous capacity building remains central to the EFCC’s mandate.

The programme, held at the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 Conference Hall in Okotie Eboh, Ikoyi, is themed “Training Programme for Legal Officers on Preparation and Dealing with Appeals in Financial Crimes & Allied Matters, Evidence Gathering and Trial Preparation for Young Lawyers.”

Declaring the training open, the Acting Zonal Director of Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, Bawa Usman Kaltungo, emphasized the importance of continuous training in response to evolving trends in criminal prosecution.

“We need to constantly improve our skills. There is always a need for training and retraining,” he said.

Participants drawn from EFCC zonal directorates in Port Harcourt, Uyo, Benin, Ibadan, and Lagos are expected to apply the knowledge gained to enhance prosecution quality, reduce procedural errors, and improve justice delivery.

The training features sessions on a wide range of topics, including appeals in financial crimes, drafting of legal processes, digital and electronic evidence, oral advocacy, asset forfeiture, and standards of proof in criminal and civil cases.

The programme is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
