The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced investigations into a self-acclaimed prophet, Godwin Sunday Ajuluchukwucheya, popularly known as Prophet Sunday Koboko, over allegations of defrauding members of his ministry of more than N70.3 million through various purported spiritual schemes.

The suspect is being investigated by operatives of the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the EFCC following multiple petitions from alleged victims who accused him of obtaining money under false pretences.

One of the petitioners, Okey Uwakwe, alleged that the prophet collected N6.23 million from him after claiming he could spiritually influence his brother, who had lived abroad since 1997, to return home.

Uwakwe further alleged that he paid an additional N3.25 million to the cleric for spiritual interventions aimed at helping his childless sister-in-law conceive after more than 15 years of marriage.

According to the petitioner, the suspect also claimed he had won N33 billion in a lottery game and encouraged church members to contribute financially with promises of sharing in the proceeds.

Uwakwe said he contributed N3.35 million to the scheme.

The petitioner further alleged that the prophet solicited investments from members for the purchase of a purported N1 billion rice processing machine, promising partnership benefits.

He said he invested N500,000, bringing his total contributions to N13.33 million, without receiving any of the promised returns.

The EFCC said that during the course of investigations, several other members of the ministry approached the commission with similar complaints.

One alleged victim told investigators that church members were persuaded to buy what the prophet described as “Holy Ghost Thunder” to battle spiritual forces allegedly preventing him from claiming the purported N33 billion lottery winnings.

According to the witness, each “Holy Ghost Thunder” item was sold for N38,000, and members were encouraged to purchase as many as possible to support the spiritual battle.

Another complainant alleged that he purchased the product in the hope that it would solve his personal challenges but said there were no results.

Investigators said preliminary findings indicate that the suspect allegedly used various items marketed as spiritual solutions, including miracle stickers, spiritual dragons and Holy Ghost Thunder, to persuade followers to part with their money.

The EFCC disclosed that the total amount allegedly collected from members of the ministry currently stands at N70,391,600.

The commission said investigations are ongoing and that the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of the probe.
