The former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has called for a stronger focus on production as a solution to Nigeria’s economic challenges.
In an interview with Newsmen on Sunday, Dalung stated that Nigeria must prioritise the growth of productive sectors of the economy rather than relying heavily on borrowing to fund development and government activities.
Speaking on the country’s economic direction, the former minister argued that sustainable growth can only be achieved when policies encourage local production, investment, and wealth creation. He maintained that increasing production across key sectors would generate more revenue, create jobs, and strengthen the economy.

According to him, Nigeria has the resources and potential needed to improve its economic situation if greater attention is given to industries that contribute directly to production. He said sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and small businesses should receive stronger support from government to boost output and stimulate economic activity.
Dalung explained that a productive economy is better positioned to withstand economic shocks and maintain long-term stability; he noted that when goods and services are produced locally, the country can reduce dependence on imports, improve foreign exchange earnings, and strengthen national development.
The ADC chieftain expressed concern over what he described as the growing dependence on borrowing by the current administration; he argued that loans may provide short-term relief but cannot serve as a permanent solution to economic difficulties.

He warned that excessive borrowing could place additional pressure on public finances and create challenges for future generations. According to him, governments should focus on policies that expand production and increase revenue generation rather than accumulating debt.
”If Nigeria needs money, we should encourage production. Once production increases, the economy will become more stable. An economy cannot achieve sustainable stability through continuous borrowing, which is the approach the Tinubu administration has adopted,” he said.
