Governor Umo Eno has urged traditional rulers across Akwa Ibom State to strengthen efforts towards promoting peace, unity and development in their respective communities.
The governor also announced plans for an upward review of the monthly remuneration and welfare package of traditional rulers in the state.
Eno spoke on Wednesday while presenting certificates of recognition to newly recognised traditional rulers at the State Supreme Traditional Rulers Council Hall in Uyo as activities marking Akwa Ibom State’s 39th anniversary continued.
The governor said modalities had been put in place for the review of the monthly remuneration of traditional rulers, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening the traditional institution and improving the welfare of its members.
He urged traditional rulers and socio-cultural organisations to use their positions and platforms to promote sustainable peace and unity within Akwa Ibom and beyond.
“Let me also use this opportunity to urge you, our traditional rulers, and our socio-cultural groups, to leverage your various platforms to promote sustainable peace and unity of our people in our state and beyond,” Eno said.
ENO: APPOINTMENT A CALL TO RESPONSIBILITY
The governor described the recognition of the traditional rulers as a call to greater responsibility, charging them to promote harmony and development within their communities.
“Akwa Ibom remains one, and will continue to remain one and work as one. Your appointment is a call to serious responsibility. Do work to ensure our communities, Local Government Areas, and State thrive in peace and harmony for development to set in properly,” he said.
Eno specifically charged the newly recognised clan heads and other traditional rulers to promote stability at the grassroots, strengthen unity and collaborate with state and local governments on security and development.
ARCHIBONG COMMENDS TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONS
Earlier, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Frank Archibong, described the ceremony as significant to the state’s traditional institutions.
Archibong highlighted the administration’s interventions in rural infrastructure and other development programmes under the ARISE Agenda.
He also commended the governor’s attention to the welfare of traditional rulers, including the release of allowances and provision of security and other welfare support.
The commissioner assured the governor of the traditional institution’s continued cooperation with the administration in pursuing the development of the state.
TRADITIONAL RULERS PLEDGE SUPPORT
In his remarks, the Oku Ibom Ibibio and President-General of the Supreme Council of Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers, Ntenyin Solomon Etuk, commended the governor’s emphasis on peace and pledged the continued support of traditional rulers in maintaining peace and unity across the state.
Etuk also assured the administration that traditional rulers would continue to provide counsel where necessary.
Chairman of the Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers, Akuku Saviour Sylvester Udofia, similarly thanked the governor for his attention to the welfare of traditional rulers and pledged the institution’s support.
SEVEN TRADITIONAL RULERS RECEIVE CERTIFICATES
The ceremony culminated in the presentation of certificates of recognition to newly recognised clan heads.
The recipients were Etebom Bassey Okon, Ndiya Clan, Ikono Local Government Area; Etebom Ini Moses Akabom, Ito Clan, Ika Local Government Area; Etebom Mbang F. Mbang, Southern Afaha Clan, Ukanafun Local Government Area; Obong Joseph Okon Esu, Odu Clan, Okobo Local Government Area; Senator Nelson Asukwo Effiong, Oron Local Government Area; Obong Eshiet Charles Eno, Eket Offiong Clan, Eket Local Government Area; and Obong Okon Etim Asanang, Idua Clan, Oron Local Government Area.
