Dozens of earthquakes struck parts of Southern California on Saturday, with a notable cluster recorded in the South Los Angeles area, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
More than 60 seismic events were recorded across the region during the day, although many of the tremors registered below magnitude 2.0 and were unlikely to have been widely felt.
Among the stronger earthquakes in the cluster was a magnitude 2.7 tremor recorded near Westmont at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Another earthquake, measuring magnitude 2.6, was recorded in the same general area at approximately 4:30 p.m., according to USGS data.
The series of relatively small earthquakes represented a noticeable burst of seismic activity in an area accustomed to frequent tremors because of Southern California’s location along and around several active fault systems.
While the majority of the recorded events were minor, the concentration of multiple earthquakes in a relatively short period attracted attention from residents and seismic monitoring authorities.
There were no immediate reports in the supplied information of major structural damage, deaths or serious injuries linked to the tremors.
Earthquake swarms can involve numerous small earthquakes occurring close together over a short period. Such activity does not necessarily indicate that a major earthquake is imminent, although seismologists continue to monitor clusters for changes in frequency, magnitude and location.
Southern California is one of the most seismically active regions in the United States, with earthquakes occurring regularly along its complex network of faults.

Authorities and residents remain accustomed to earthquake preparedness measures because larger earthquakes can occur with little warning. Emergency officials routinely advise residents to secure heavy objects, maintain emergency supplies and know how to respond during strong shaking.
The latest activity was therefore being closely monitored, particularly because of the concentration of tremors around South Los Angeles, even though the recorded earthquakes were generally low in magnitude.
