Nigerian Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed plans to buy back the masters of his music catalogue from his international record label, Sony, ahead of his eventual retirement from music.

The singer disclosed an episode of The Long Form Podcast, where he stressed the importance of ownership in the music industry.

Davido explained that regaining control of his masters would allow him to secure long-term financial benefits for his family, particularly his children, through continued royalty earnings even after he exits the music scene.

“I have a good music contract. But the most important thing is ownership. I plan to get my master’s back from Sony soon,” he said. “With that, I can give each of my kids songs they will keep earning royalties from even after I retire.”

He further noted that artists must pay closer attention to the business side of music, adding that creative success alone is not enough without proper control of intellectual property.

Davido’s comments add to ongoing conversations within the global music industry about artists’ rights, catalogue ownership, and long-term revenue from recorded works.
