The Federal High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State, has convicted and sentenced five individuals to imprisonment for abusing the Nigerian currency through the spraying of naira notes.

The judgment was delivered on Thursday, October 15, 2026, by Justice F. A. Olubanjo, following their prosecution for offences relating to the improper handling of the national currency.

According to a statement attributed to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the convicted individuals are Ekweozor Divine, Udumeluo Godwin Chukwuebuka, Kennedy Uwadia, Godstime Ogie Eghosa and Bright Barry Imade.

The five defendants were convicted on one-count charges bordering on the spraying of naira notes, contrary to Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, and punishable under Section 21(1) of the same Act.

Under the legislation, spraying, dancing or stamping on naira notes during social occasions or other gatherings constitutes an offence against the national currency.

Section 21(1) of the Act prescribes a punishment of not less than six months’ imprisonment, a fine of not less than ₦50,000, or both, for applicable currency abuse offences.

The convictions highlight the legal consequences of practices involving the improper handling of naira notes, particularly at weddings, parties and other social gatherings where money spraying is common.

The EFCC has continued to prosecute individuals accused of currency abuse as part of efforts to enforce the provisions of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act and promote respect for the national currency.

The commission has repeatedly cautioned Nigerians that cultural practices or social celebrations do not exempt individuals from compliance with laws protecting the naira.

Although the five individuals were reported to have received jail sentences, the exact duration of their respective prison terms was not specified in the information provided.

The latest convictions serve as a reminder that individuals found guilty of abusing the national currency may face imprisonment, monetary penalties or both, as provided under Nigerian law.
