Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Essien Umoh, has commended the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal Polytechnic Ukana Chapter, for successfully hosting its maiden international conference, describing the event as a major academic achievement.
Prof. Umoh gave the commendation on Tuesday during the conference held alongside activities marking the 12th anniversary of the institution at the Polytechnic’s main campus in Ukana.
The commissioner also lauded the Federal Polytechnic Ukana for what he described as remarkable academic and infrastructural growth since its establishment 12 years ago, noting that the institution has continued to make significant contributions to technical and vocational education.
Speaking at the event, Umoh said he was impressed by the pace of development within the institution, having visited the Polytechnic earlier in the year.

“I was here earlier this year, and I am not surprised at the level of development achieved within a few months,” he said.
The conference, themed “Emerging Technologies for Scientific Advancement, Innovation and Sustainable Economic Development,” brought together academics, researchers and stakeholders to discuss the role of technology in driving development.
While acknowledging the benefits of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, the commissioner cautioned against overreliance on technological tools, stressing the importance of human intellect.
“While we try to make life easier through technology, it should not get to the point where we become lazy. The greatest resource remains the human mind,” he said.
In her remarks, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic Ukana, Mrs Eduma Enobong Essien, reiterated the institution’s commitment to promoting research, innovation and technological advancement.
She described the combined hosting of ASUP’s maiden international conference and the Polytechnic’s 12th anniversary celebration as a reflection of the institution’s steady progress and growing reputation in higher education.
According to her, the management will continue to pursue strategic partnerships and investments aimed at strengthening academic excellence and institutional development.
Chairman of the conference planning committee, Sir Elijah Nse Akwa, said the event was not only a celebration of the Polytechnic’s achievements but also an opportunity to chart a path for greater excellence.

The conference featured a keynote lecture by Dr Ofonmbuk Atakpa of Akwa Ibom State University and a lead paper presentation by Dr Ime Robson Nseobot of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, both of whom highlighted the importance of emerging technologies in fostering innovation and sustainable economic growth.
Highlights of the event included the cutting of the institution’s 12th anniversary cake, presentation of awards to distinguished members of the Polytechnic community and recognition of key stakeholders by the ASUP chapter.
Organisers said the conference will continue with technical sessions and panel discussions focused on research, innovation, technology and sustainable development.
