At least four people have been killed, and more than 20 others injured as Russia and Ukraine exchanged fresh waves of drone attacks amid the ongoing war between the two countries.
Ukraine’s General Staff said on Sunday that Russia launched 863 drones at targets across Ukraine within 24 hours.
Russian authorities, meanwhile, said their air defences intercepted and destroyed 389 Ukrainian drones during the overnight attacks, including drones over Tatarstan, other Russian regions and the Russian-occupied Crimean Peninsula.
The latest attacks also occurred near Poland’s border with Ukraine, raising fresh concerns in the NATO member state.
Polish and Ukrainian officials said two Russian drone incidents were recorded near the border.
The Dorohusk-Yahodyn border crossing was temporarily disrupted after a truck was hit about 800 metres from the Polish border. Polish border guards later confirmed that operations had resumed.
A separate Russian drone reportedly struck a train travelling towards Warsaw near the Polish border in Ukraine. Officials said there were no casualties.
Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces targeted Ukrainian logistics and energy facilities, as well as infrastructure used to transport military supplies from Europe into Ukraine.
Ukraine relies heavily on routes through Poland, Romania and Moldova for trade and the delivery of military assistance.
In the southern port city of Odesa, at least nine people were injured in a Russian overnight drone attack, according to Serhiy Lysak, head of the city’s military administration.
Odesa, which hosts Ukraine’s major Black Sea port facilities, has been repeatedly targeted by Russian missiles and drones amid Moscow’s efforts to disrupt Ukraine’s maritime exports.
Meanwhile, Alexey Likhachev, head of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom, said two people were killed when drones targeted fuel trucks near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
In Russia’s Tatarstan region, authorities reported that two people were killed and 12 others injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on Nizhnekamsk.
Despite the continuing attacks, Russia has indicated that negotiations involving Moscow, Kyiv and Washington could resume.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday that three-way talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States could take place in October.
He said Moscow had not ruled out the possibility of such discussions in the near future.
US officials have recently held separate engagements with Ukrainian and Russian authorities as Washington seeks to revive efforts towards ending the conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also said he would be willing to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Miami in December.
Previous attempts to broker a lasting settlement have failed to produce an agreement, while fighting and long-range attacks have continued on both sides.
