Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has approved the payment of weigh-in allowance to journalists in the state’s employment who were previously omitted from the scheme, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare of media professionals and continued collaboration with the press.
The Governor announced the approval on Monday while receiving the newly elected executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, on a courtesy visit at Government House, Uyo.
Governor Eno said that since some journalists in government service were already benefiting from the allowance, it was only fair to extend the same privilege to others who had been left out.

He acknowledged the sacrifices of journalists, particularly members of the Government House Press Corps, noting that they often work beyond official hours in discharging their duties and deserve appropriate welfare incentives.
The Governor consequently directed the Head of Civil Service to implement the approval immediately.
Reiterating his administration’s commitment to the welfare of citizens, Governor Eno assured that his government would continue to fulfil its campaign promises as encapsulated in the ARISE Agenda.
He said the developmental achievements being recorded across the state were the product of deliberate planning and purposeful leadership, stressing that sustainable development requires intentional actions rather than mere expectations.
According to him, the state is making steady progress across critical sectors, citing the arrival of the first batch of 20 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses as another milestone in the government’s efforts to improve transportation and enhance the state’s economy.
Governor Eno congratulated the new NUJ leadership on its successful election and thanked the union for its cooperation and support for his administration.
He urged journalists to continue projecting the state’s development initiatives and partner with government in its drive to position Akwa Ibom as a leading tourism destination.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, said the visit was to formally introduce the new executive to the Governor and express appreciation for his consistent support for the union.
He described Governor Eno as one of the most media-friendly governors in the country and commended his contributions to the growth of journalism in the state.
The NUJ chairman listed some of the Governor’s interventions to include the completion of the Patience Umo Eno Hall at the NUJ Press Centre, a project abandoned for over 18 years, the presentation of brand-new vehicles to the immediate past leadership of the union, and the appointment of journalists into key positions in government.
Comrade John also assured the Governor of the union’s commitment to tackling quackery and fake news while remaining a dependable partner in promoting the development of Akwa Ibom State.
