Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has identified Aston Villa manager Unai Emery as his preferred candidate to take charge of Manchester United if the club decides to dismiss Michael Carrick.

Carragher made the recommendation amid growing uncertainty over Carrick’s future following United’s 3-0 Premier League defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The defeat extended Manchester United’s winless run to eight matches in all competitions and left the club 16th in the Premier League standings.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher argued that Emery possesses the managerial experience and qualities required to lead United through their current difficulties.

“Unai Emery is a manager I look at when I think about Manchester United,” Carragher said.

He also described the Aston Villa boss as the best manager currently working in the Premier League.

Emery, 54, has managed Aston Villa since October 2022, overseeing the club’s progress in domestic and European competitions.

The Spanish coach previously managed Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Villarreal and Sevilla, building an extensive coaching career across several major European leagues.

Carragher’s comments come as Manchester United’s management faces questions over the team’s performances and Carrick’s position.

United conceded twice before halftime against Bournemouth, with Rayan and Marcus Tavernier scoring for the visitors. Evanilson added a third goal in the second half to complete the victory.

Carrick’s decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench throughout the encounter also attracted attention.

Following the defeat, Carrick acknowledged the difficult situation but declined to offer assurances about his future, saying he remained committed to acting in Manchester United’s interests.

Reports indicate that United’s senior management has discussed his position, although the club has not officially announced his dismissal or departure.

Emery remains under contract at Aston Villa, and there has been no official confirmation of an approach by Manchester United.

Carragher’s endorsement therefore represents a recommendation rather than an indication that a managerial appointment is imminent.
