Vehicular movement has been severely disrupted along the Ilorin–Igbeti Federal Highway in Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State following the collapse of the Moro Bridge, leaving commuters stranded and prompting emergency intervention by the state government.

The incident reportedly occurred around 5 a.m. on Thursday when the ageing bridge gave way under the weight of a heavy-duty truck, cutting off a major transport corridor linking Kwara and Oyo states.

Motorists and commercial transport operators described the development as a significant setback to economic activities in the region, citing delays in the movement of goods and rising transportation costs.

A businesswoman, Kafayat, who was caught in the gridlock, lamented the impact of the collapse on daily commerce. She said the situation had caused “serious delays and increased the cost of transportation for commuters and businesses.”

In response, the Kwara State Government announced immediate traffic diversion measures to ease congestion and reduce hardship on road users.

In a statement issued through the Press Secretary of the Ministry of Works, Commissioner Engr. Abdulquawiy Olododo confirmed the incident and said engineers had been deployed to the site to commence emergency palliative works on alternative routes.

“The Kwara State Government is working with federal authorities to immediately divert traffic following the collapse of the Moro Bridge overnight,” Olododo said.

He explained that the bridge failed in the early hours of the day after a heavy-duty vehicle crossed it, causing a major disruption along the busy route.

“Engineers have been mobilised to begin palliative work on diversion routes to reduce the hardship being experienced by road users,” he added.

Olododo further disclosed that the state government had received assurances from federal authorities that a new bridge project near the collapsed structure was already underway.

He also directed traffic management agencies to work closely with transport unions to ensure orderly movement while urging commuters to remain patient as efforts continue to restore normalcy.

The Moro Bridge, situated along the Ilorin–Igbeti Federal Highway between Oko-Olowo/Mandala in Ilorin West and Asa Local Government Area, is a key link connecting Kwara and Oyo States, as well as routes leading toward the Benin Republic border.

The colonial-era Bailey bridge has long been considered structurally fragile, undergoing repeated repairs over the years due to persistent signs of deterioration.
