Nigerian sprinter, Favour Ashe has set his sights on winning gold at the upcoming Confederation of African Athletics Senior Championships, following a strong outing at the World Relays Championship.

The championships, scheduled to begin on May 12 in Accra, will feature more than 1,000 athletes from about 50 countries across the continent.

Ashe played a key role in helping Nigeria secure qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in China, as well as a spot in the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship set for Budapest later this year.

Buoyed by those performances, the 100m specialist said he is aiming for a double success in Ghana, targeting both individual and relay gold medals.

“I’m in good shape, and my goal in Accra is to win gold in the 100m and also help the team secure gold in the relays,” he said.

The sprinter also reflected on earlier criticism from sections of fans and stakeholders, saying the team used it as motivation during the World Relays in Botswana, where Nigeria secured qualification milestones.

“Before the championship, it was ‘Ashe is finished,’ but I’ve proven my worth,” he said, adding that the results were achieved through focus and determination.

Ashe’s recent performances have been seen as part of a broader resurgence for Nigerian athletics as the country builds momentum ahead of upcoming global competitions.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) says the team now heads into the continental championships with renewed confidence and strong medal expectations.
