The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has announced a special tribute to Lionel Messi, with all matches across the country’s football competitions set to be paused in the 10th minute to recognise the Argentina captain’s contribution to the national team.
The stoppage will last for one minute and will feature a round of applause from players, officials and supporters as a tribute to Messi’s historic international career. The decision to use the 10th minute is a symbolic reference to the iconic No. 10 shirt worn by Messi throughout his time with Argentina.
The tribute will apply across men’s and women’s competitions, as well as other football categories organised under the AFA, allowing fans nationwide to participate in honouring the 39-year-old forward.
Messi recently announced his retirement from international football after a 21-year career with Argentina. During that period, he became the country’s record appearance holder and leading goalscorer, while guiding the national team to major titles including the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Copa América triumphs.
The AFA’s tribute comes as Argentina continues to celebrate Messi’s legacy following his departure from the national team. The federation has also highlighted his influence on Argentine football and his role in one of the most successful eras in the country’s history.
The gesture follows widespread calls from supporters and football figures across Argentina to recognise Messi’s impact after more than two decades wearing the national colours.
