Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown is expected to appear in a Miami courtroom on Wednesday to accept a plea agreement that could allow him to avoid prison in an attempted murder case.
Brown, 38, is expected to plead no contest to a reduced charge of aggravated assault and receive probation under the proposed agreement, according to his attorney, Mark Eiglarsh.
The deal would also allow adjudication to be withheld, meaning Brown would not be formally convicted of the felony charge if the agreement is approved by the court and he satisfies its conditions.
Brown was initially charged with attempted murder, an offence that could have resulted in a lengthy prison sentence if he had been convicted.
The case stems from an incident following a celebrity boxing event in Miami on May 16, 2025.
According to an arrest warrant, Brown allegedly obtained a handgun from a security staff member and fired two shots at Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, with whom he had earlier been involved in a physical confrontation.
Nantambu told investigators that a bullet grazed his neck.
Brown has maintained that he acted in self-defence, saying he had been attacked and that people were attempting to steal jewellery from him.
His defence has also cited Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, which allows the use of force, including deadly force in certain circumstances, when a person reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent death or serious bodily harm.
Nantambu’s attorney, Richard Cooper, has described the proposed plea agreement as fair and said his client had forgiven Brown and would not cooperate with prosecutors.
Brown’s attorney has said the terms of the agreement were favourable to his client, while prosecutors indicated that details would be addressed during Wednesday’s court proceedings.
Brown played 12 seasons in the NFL and became one of the league’s most productive wide receivers, particularly during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He recorded 928 receptions for more than 12,000 receiving yards during his NFL career and later won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
His NFL career effectively ended following a January 2022 game against the New York Jets, when he removed his jersey and shoulder pads before leaving the field during the game. The Buccaneers subsequently released him.
Brown was extradited from Dubai in November 2025 after an arrest warrant was issued in connection with the Miami case.
