Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly sought advice from Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé before the club intensified efforts to sign AS Roma midfielder Manu Koné during the summer transfer window.

According to reports from Foot Mercato, Alonso contacted his former Real Madrid player for insight on the French midfielder as Chelsea searched for a replacement for Enzo Fernández, who was nearing a high-profile move to Manchester City.

The Blues had been exploring options in midfield after Fernández’s expected departure and identified Koné as one of their preferred targets. Alonso is said to have been impressed by the midfielder’s qualities and sought Mbappé’s opinion on his fellow French international before Chelsea pushed forward with their interest.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Koné came after the club considered several midfield alternatives as they prepared for possible changes in their squad. Reports indicated that negotiations with Roma progressed, but the deal eventually failed after the Italian club struggled to secure a suitable replacement for the French midfielder before the transfer deadline.

Koné ultimately remained at Roma, despite Chelsea’s interest, leaving Alonso’s side to continue assessing their midfield options following Fernández’s move.
