Popular Nigerian comedian and filmmaker, Ayo Makun widely known as AY has expressed grief over the reported death of Nollywood actor, Alexx Ekubo, describing the tragedy as a reminder that many celebrities endure personal pain away from the public eye.

In an emotional message shared on Instagram, the entertainer, reflected on seeing the late actor after his passing and said Ekubo appeared calm and at peace.

According to him, the actor carried burdens privately despite maintaining a cheerful public image. AY noted that many people only knew Ekubo through the smiles and charisma he displayed publicly, while remaining unaware of the challenges he allegedly faced in silence.

The comedian revealed that the late actor never openly discussed his health condition with colleagues, adding that the development should encourage greater empathy toward public figures.

AY also spoke extensively about the emotional and psychological pressures associated with celebrity life, including depression, loneliness, illness, public criticism, and the burden of constant scrutiny on social media.

He argued that behind glamorous appearances, movie premieres, and online content, many entertainers are struggling with deeply personal issues unknown to the public.

Referencing other public figures who faced private battles, AY mentioned late actor Chadwick Boseman, gospel singer Sammie Okposo, and British television presenter Caroline Flack as examples of celebrities whose struggles were not fully visible to the public.

He warned against online mockery, cyberbullying, and turning people’s personal difficulties into entertainment, stressing that insensitive comments can worsen emotional and mental distress.

The filmmaker further urged Nigerians to show compassion before spreading rumours or making harsh judgments online, noting that many individuals may already be dealing with invisible hardships.

In his tribute, AY called on the public to appreciate and support people while they are alive rather than waiting until after their death to express love and concern.

Meanwhile, tributes have continued to pour in from across the entertainment industry and social media following reports of Ekubo’s death, with colleagues and fans mourning the loss of one of Nollywood’s most recognised actors.
